Little Free Libraries

The 2012-2013 Buffalo County 4-H Countywide Service-Learning Project was to promote local literacy projects through intergenerational reading opportunities and the creation of Little Free Libraries. As a result of 4-H members service, the establishment of nearly 30 Little Free Libraries occured all filled with free books for exchange. The mission of the Little Free Library is to promote literacy and the love of reading by building free book exchanges worldwide and to build a sense of community as we share skills, creativity and wisdom across generations.

Location: Alma, Wisconsin

Sponsored By: Buffalo County 4-H Youth Leaders’ Council

This bookcase was placed especially for use by Courthouse employees, clients and visitors. Youth leaders were careful to include books from diverse cultures and in multiple languages in this Little Free Library to promote literacy for all.

This unique barn themed Little Free Library was given as a gift from Richland County 4-H members to Buffalo County 4-H members as a start to their Countywide Service-Learning Project for literacy development in 2013.

Go Pack Go! This Little Free Library is a tribute to Green Bay Packer fans everywhere. While it is all green and gold on the outside, the books on the inside are an eclectic collection including adult mystery novels and children’s favorites.

The library serves campers at Rieck’s Lake and local Alma residents. It was one of many Little Free Libraries filled with discarded books contributed by the Alma Public Library.

Waumandee Country Store hosts this Little Free Library bookcase inside for their patrons and guests. Golden Hornets 4-H Club members took the time to code these books by genre and reading level for the enjoyment of the readers.

The location is perfect for local seniors enjoying a healthy lunch at the meal site or for local community groups that utilize the building. Voters who visit the town hall will be welcomed by the farm themed Little Free Library and garden boxes, both constructed by Glencoe Hustlers 4-H Club members and leaders.

Take a break from your Barn Quilt Tour and enjoy a book at the Buffalo City Park. This Little Libarary is very unique in the fact that it  serves many purposes.  It offers free books for everyone to enjoy, and it is part of the Barn Quilt Service Learning Project Tour. The Barn Quilt Service Learning Project is a project designed to promote Agricultural Tourism in Buffalo County.

Buffalo County 4-H Afterschool members from the Cochrane-Fountain City school district filled this library with books and magazines for visitors to the Goose Lake Park and Swimming Pool. The students plan to keep it filled with interesting reads all summer and winter!

Originally constructed by the Montana Pioneers 4-H Club and then mounted by the former Naples Novelty 4-H club, this Little Free Library is now maintained by youth leaders from all over Buffalo County. The library houses a ton of books from adventure and classics to children’s books and adult fiction, including some bilingual resources.
