Reality Check Financial Education Experience 2017

In 2017, University of Wisconsin – Extension’s Reality Check Financial Education Experience welcomed Independence School District along with Alma, Cochrane-Fountain City, Mondovi, Durand, Pepin, Elmwood, Plum City and River Valley. The learning event included nearly 350 students and over 120 adult volunteers from local communities. Students develop an appreciation for what their parents do to provide for them each month as they are expected to pay bills and see if they can maintain their budget as if they are a mid-20 year old with a career. New to this year’s Reality Check was the Library station featuring Alma Public Librarian Rita Magno and Mondovi Public Librarian Arin Wilken. The Library provided an opportunity for students to learn about the free resources available to them in the community and ways to save dollars each month by utilizing the Library. Reality Check also included the Wheel of Impulse Buys for the first time in 2017. Carl Duley, Buffalo County UW-Extension Ag Agent, aided students in gaining a better understanding of how large purchases and impulse buys can impact an individuals monthly budget. There was also real life rewards from local businesses for a large majority of students who prepared a resume for their employment interview that starts of the the Reality Check learning experience.
