Students from Cochrane-Fountain City, Mondovi, Durand, Gilmanton, Elmwood, Plum City and River Valley participated in the 12th annual University of Wisconsin-Extension Reality Check at Durand High School on March 29, 2018. Students research a career, interview to ‘get the job’, calculate their net income after taxes and experience paying all their bills for one month in this financial literacy simulation. At the event, “life happens” and students have to pay for a busted tire or other unexpected life experiences. Students, who are mostly juniors and seniors, also make life decisions regarding important choices and financial decisions; many students also care for a child in the event. The biggest Reality Check for the students each year is often learning all the responsibilities their parents and guardians have each month while also caring for them.
